Causes and timing of future biosphere extinction

چکیده
We present a minimal model for the global carbon cycle of the Earth containing the reservoirs mantle, ocean floor, continental crust, biosphere, and the kerogen, as well as the aggregated reservoir ocean and atmosphere. The model is specified by introducing three different types of biosphere: procaryotes, eucaryotes, and complex 5 multicellular life. We find that from the Archaean to the future a procaryotic biosphere always exists. 2 Gyr ago eucaryotic life first appears. The emergence of complex mul-ticellular life is connected with an explosive increase in biomass and a strong decrease in Cambrian global surface temperature at about 0.54 Gyr ago. In the long-term future the three types of biosphere will die out in reverse sequence of their appearance. We 10 show that there is no evidence for an implosion-like extinction in contrast to the Cam-brian explosion. The ultimate life span of the biosphere is defined by the extinction of procaryotes in about 1.6 Gyr.

متن کاملThe human seizure of planet Earth Dodging Extinction: Power, Food, Money, and the Future of Life on Earth Anthony Barnosky (University of California Press, Oakland, CA; 2014) ISBN: 9780520274372
Planet Earth is facing one of its most dramatic biodiversity crises, and we humans are behind it. Two hundred thousand years ago, somewhere in Africa, a new form of life arose — Homo sapiens sapiens. Approximately one hundred thousand years later, we left Africa, spreading across the continents to dominate and transform all ecosystems. Only now are we starting to understand our impact in the Bi...
متن کاملLife in the Aftermath of Mass Extinctions
The vast majority of species that have ever lived went extinct sometime other than during one of the great mass extinction events. In spite of this, mass extinctions are thought to have outsized effects on the evolutionary history of life. While part of this effect is certainly due to the extinction itself, I here consider how the aftermaths of mass extinctions might contribute to the evolution...
